Project Overview

WCSD partnered with Impact Public Schools to identify and build out their fourth school, Impact | Black River Elementary (BRE) in Renton, WA. BRE opened its doors in August 2023 to K-2 grade students and will add approximately 100 students per year until a stable-state enrollment of 594 is achieved in the 2027-2028 school year.

The site was originally built as grocery store in 1959 as part of a shopping mall development. The building was a one-story that was vacant and in need of significant rehab. The renovations involved seismic upgrades, roof replacement, full replacements of mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire/life/safety systems, and interior improvements to create 22 classrooms, admin space, a commons, new restrooms, and a heat-and-serve kitchen. Exterior improvements included the addition of a sidewalk/plaza area in front of the building, a playground, and parking lot landscaping.
