Equitas Academy

This site is located in the Pico Union neighborhood of Los Angeles, on a commercial corridor just west of downtown LA and adjacent to a dense residential neighborhood. LA Metro buses run along Pico with stops two blocks east and west of the subject property. The 25,000 sf building was a vacant warehouse. A Conditional Use Permit (CUP) was required to allow use of the property for a school.

PCSD negotiated an agreement for a lease option period of 300-days with the right to commence a 20-year lease at the conclusion of the Option Period. The 20-year lease commenced in January 2012.

Equitas Academy Charter School was started in 2009 with an intiial population of 300 students in grades K-3. It now has 450 students in grades K-5. Equitas was founded by Malka Borrego, who was born and raised in the Pico Union community. Malka is an alumna of the Building Excellent Schools (BES) Fellowship, a year long, comprehensive training program in urban charter school creation and leadership. Walton Family Foundation is a major supporter of BES.
